Initial Assessment
Upon arrival, we’ll take a photograph of your teeth to record the original color or starting shade. This initial image is important as it will allow you and Dr. D’Alfonso to clearly see the effectiveness of the whitening treatment by comparing the before and after results.
Preparation for Whitening
Dr. D’Alfonso will use cheek retractors to ensure that the whitening gel is applied evenly across your teeth. To prepare your teeth for the whitening process, they will be given a quick rinse and air-dried. Ensuring the teeth are dry is key for the best application of the whitening agent.
Gum Protection
Before applying the whitening gel, a protective substance called OpalDam Green will be placed around the base of your teeth on your gums. This step is vital to shield your gums from the strong 40% hydrogen peroxide gel used in the whitening process, which could otherwise cause sensitivity.
Application of Whitening Gel
The Ultradent Boost gel will then be meticulously applied to each tooth. The gel remains on your teeth for about 20 minutes in the initial application. After this period, the gel will be carefully suctioned off, and the process may be repeated at least once more, depending on the level of whitening desired. Multiple applications may be necessary to achieve the optimal shade.
Final Steps and Inspection
Once the desired whiteness is achieved, your teeth will be rinsed, and the OpalDam Green will be removed from your gums. Dr. D’Alfonso will perform a final inspection to ensure that the results meet your expectations. The entire session typically lasts about 40 minutes, although additional time might be required for more extensive whitening cases.
